It replaced the anthem "'''Nigeria We Hail Thee'''", adopted on [[History of Nigeria#Independence|independence]] in 1960. The words were written by a [[United Kingdom|British]] [[expatriate]], Lilian Jean Williams, while the music was composed by Frances Benda.
